So this weekend I got out of my dwelling and found some time to take in the second attempt at bringing The Hulk to the silver screen. Marvel made a wise choice following Iron Man up with The Hulk as quickly as it did. The Ang Lee abortion had soured many people to The Hulk so in order to have sucess they needed the momentum that Iron Man provided which to be honest is what got my butt in the seat.
Gone is the previous character introspection that Lee did and replaced with more destruction and ass kicking than you could shake a stick at. The movie is paced quickly from the get go with much of the backstory of the origins of the Hulk told via a clip montage at the beginning and a few flash back type scenes. This is good and bad, for one it allows the action to start that much quicker, but on the other hand it doesn’t allow time for the interesting love triangle between Bruce Banner, Betty Ross and The Hulk to really form and it leaves General Ross’ character kind of flat and bland.
Overall the drastic swing between movies I think is for the better to get The Hulk back in fan’s good graces, but I also feel the swing may have gone a bit too far. To me the characters felt secondary to the action happening and a little flat, especially when there is decades of character build up via the books. I would recommend checking this movie out in the theater though because the character of The Hulk is very much larger than life and a home theater I just don’t feel will give that grandness justice.

Every once and awhile there comes a movie that I implore people they must see. Most often it is a chick flick like The Notebook or any of the assorted Hugh Grant romantic comedies (that isn’t a joke. Love Actually was great!). But this movie is much different and in no way will it ever be considered a masterpiece by a critic or academy award worthy. You MUST see one of the greatest action movies ever made, Shoot’em Up.
Keep in mind I did say ACTION movie. There are numerous inconsistencies and even more impossibilities but if you are trying to prove the validity of this movie then you aren’t appreciating it’s entertainment value. So just turn on an episode of Mythbusters and ask your mom for some cheesypoofs. I admit it is short on plot (actually I am not sure there is one and frankly don’t really care) but who needs plot when you have precision marksmanship.
Clive Owen as the hero Smith is superb. He has that reluctant hero attitude that few could emulate let alone look cool doing it. And he is a bloody brit.
So if you are a fan of staggering body counts, ridiculously absurd methods of killing, horrible one liners, inconceivable gun fights, and a bullet proof hero who uses bullets for more than just killing and uses carrots for more than just eating you MUST watch this movie. The action is so implausible you can only chuckle at the improbable escapes but you will thoroughly enjoy it. I guarantee it.
I watched it twice the same day. It was awesome. Bought it for $7 and it is worth $70.
It is a combination of Kill Bill Vol. 1 (lots o’killing), Sin City (inconceivable violence) and Face/Off (absurd one liners).
Obviously any female will hate it.
What are you waiting for go get it now!!

I went to check out Iron Man on Friday, and I’m glad to say it kicks all sorts of ass. After a pretty funky string of crap, Marvel has finally turned around their streak of terrible movies. The casting is pretty much perfect - even though I could have done without Gwyneth Paltrow. Robert Downey Jr. was an awesome Tony Stark, and Jeff Bridges played a surprisingly good bad guy - even if I couldn’t shake the thought that it was “the dude” in disguise.
The story was great - following the Iron Man canon nearly perfectly, aside from the move to change the origin setting to Afghanistan from Vietnam, a good idea in my opinion. The main bad guy is Iron Monger, though they never mention his name in the flick.
The effects were awesome - and the tech design for both the Iron Man suit and Iron Monger suit were well thought out - in other words, it actually looks like the suits could function in real life. The way the repulsor blasts were depicted is just perfection.
This flick works for comic fans and non-fans alike - it’s just a solid movie. I’d suggest you check it out. A word to the wise - especially if you’re a Marvel fan, stay until after the credits.
